Help finding a book about a young girl who at some point eats kumquats?????

I'm trying to find a book for my mom. It was a book she read in the late 60's, possibly early 70s. She recalls it was a about a girl who took a train trip. My mom thinks she may have visited India and that she ate kumquats. If anyone has any ideas on a possible book title?????
